The Effect of a Simulated Scotoma on Rapid Scene Understanding
We investigated the impact of foveal vision loss on scene understanding using a simulated scotoma. Results showed that the scotoma led to descriptions with significantly (F = 5.99, p = .027) lower similarity to the gold standard. The impact of the scotoma on descriptions was greater for scenes depicting social interactions. Our findings provide a method to assess the impact of vision loss on scene understanding.
