Thriving Through Relationships: Impacts of Social Support on Thriving in Sexually-Diverse and Gender-Diverse Young Adults

Abstract

Despite increased visibility and support, sexually-diverse and gender-diverse (SGD, a more inclusive term for LGBTQ+) individuals face high levels of stigma and prejudice, which can lead to negative outcomes for their health and well-being. There is growing evidence that members of stigmatized and marginalized groups who have strong psychosocial resources are better equipped to cope with identity-related stressors. However, the literature on coping with stigma and discrimination has not been well integrated with the literature on identity-affirming support, resilience, and thriving. In a study of SGD young adults (N = 400), I test how different types of support uniquely contribute to aspects of positive well-being, such as thriving and self-concept clarity.
