Abstract Moments: A Network Approach To States Of Openness

Abstract

Openness to experience, or just openness, is a complex and dynamic personality construct. Yet most measures of openness overlook these characteristics and instead treat openness as relatively simple and unvarying. As a result, the processes underlying openness and how these processes can be manipulated to exert momentary (i.e., state-like) or enduring (i.e., trait-like) changes in openness, remains unclear. These limitations may be addressed by developing measures from a network psychometric perspective, which views constructs as complex and dynamic networks of interacting components. Accordingly, the present study used a psychometric network approach to construct a brief measure for capturing states of openness called the State Openness Inventory (SOI). Future work may use this inventory to study the temporal dynamics of openness, thus paving the way for greater explanation, prediction, and control over this influential and mysterious domain of personality.
